chapter 1 complete!

Yup, I finished the last page of chapter 1 a few hours ago. But it'll be a month from now when it officially ends. XD

Things I learnt:
  • I draw my panels and speech bubbles too small.
  • Chibis are the most fun to draw, but I suck at humour.
  • Having to do everything myself is a pain in the butt. That said, I really respect the mangaka who work on an entire comic by themselves. I now feel their pain.
  • Designing characters is all fine and dandy, but when it comes down to drawing them in action, it actually gets kinda complicated.
  • I SUCK AT ACTION SCENES. OH GOD PAGE 7. *hides face in hands*
  • I need to learn how to plan out my pages better.
That being said, I actually have written down an outline of how chapter 2 will go. Whoo! Also new characters being introduced, finally! I was getting sick of just drawing Tora and Mac.

introducing the villian

Judging from Tora and Inu's basic colour schemes, some of you may have guessed by now who the two main characters may be. So, it's time to introduce the bad guys! Well, one at a time.

Neko-yasha (cat demon) or just plain Neko for short, he's one big guy with a bad attitude. Furious at the gods for not leaving a place for him in heaven, he slinked away after the zodiac race, never to be seen again. While some may have believed him to be dead, or even a myth, he has actually been hiding away, planning his grand revenge.

He can drain people's soul from their bodies and use them as energy. The souls he drains coagulates into something resembling purple fire. He was also the first animal to "discover" about Brave Form, and the four other animals allied with him are permenantly in that form as well. How they do it though, is a mystery.

Inu Brave form

As is befitting of his nature, Inu's advanced form looks like a noble swordsman from ancient China.

He has two swords, and can perform some basic energy-based attacks now. (eg. imbuing swords with energy to create a stronger slash) His strength still lies mostly in his excellent swordsmanship.

Author's Notes:
Yet again another unconscious link... Inu's design and swords have been loosely based off Cao Pi from Dynasty Warriors.

more panel progress

Incidentally, this image is from a panel in the page directly before the one I posted before. (hooray for run on sentences!)

Tora Brave form

Tora's Brave form takes his ability to summon flames and multiplies it by a hundred. He can control its intensity, how it moves, how hot it burns, even its colour. He retains his strength from his normal form and still packs a powerful punch, but his main attacks now consist mostly of the flames he controls.

Although Tora is in this advanced stage, he still retains some appearance traits as his normal form, and of course all the same personality. (yes, he is still short compared to some other animals)

Author's Notes:
Although I wasn't actually looking at a picture of him at the time, Tora's outfit seems to be largely inspired by Sanada Yukimura from Sengoku Basara. Yup, that's anime having an unconscious effect on me. @_@

fight the power

I've been watching a lot of Gurren Lagann lately. Gotta find a way to fit this into the comic.

Brave Form

Brave Form is probably best described as "unleashing the animal's full potential through the cooperation of their partner".

In the days when the animals gathered purely for the Battle, such a thing did not exist. It was only due to Neko's recent interference with the world that has caused such a power to develop.

When an animal gains Brave Form, they will have enhanced powers and/or weapons, and adds a whole new arsenal of moves with which to attack with. Additionally, they usually take on a new appearance that proudly shows the land from which they originally came from.

The combined new strength of the zodiacs against the cat has yet to be seen...

woof

Name: Inu (狗)
Zodiac Position:
11th

The silent, noble swordsman. Inu has a strict personal code that he adheres to, almost like bushido. He is the complete opposite of Tora - where Tora charges in head first without a thought, Inu prefers to analyse the situation before acting.

Just like his animal personification, Inu is loyal almost to a fault. He will never hesitate to protect his partner and his friends.

Inu's preferred weapon is a sword.
